I’ve noticed a trend
Two generations above me got buried by paper. Suddenly information was flying at them from so many different angles. Some of it was helpful, some of it was sales, some of it news, and it was hard to tell the difference. They had paper overload.
The next generation was raised to take care of what they had and repair things when they broke. But society moved into a global economy where things were made cheaply, not expected to last and thrown away. This generation can find itself trapped into holding onto everything, thus resulting in stuff overload.
My generation had to learn the art of curation because of data overload.
I’ve been looking for what comes next so that perhaps we can stay ahead of the curve. And I have a free hints:
For this generation that is used to things that go away quickly being inexpensive, vegetables (which rot rather quickly) are not inexpensive.
Entertainment is flying as them from all angles.
a seemingly global shift away from globalism (and consequently away from the throwaway culture that has created a lot of issues for our planet)
I think this generation’s area of challenge is time, and their lesson will be in the opposite direction…one of cultivation.
Relationships vs. entertainment
Recreation vs. mind-numbing
Responsibility vs striving (I think this one might be in every generation)
Vegetables and exercise vs. microwave pizza and gaming.
Think about vegetables and our need for real nutrients which take time and carefully cultivated soil. I wonder if this generation’s challenge is to go slower, to go deeper, to be more thoughtful. To cultivate relationships, resources and uses of time that will have a lasting, positive impact.
Like previous generations, some will get caught and stay in the rapid pace, just dealing with what is coming at them. Yet, I wonder if we aren’t seeing an opportunity to take a breath and get some physical and mental space. An opportunity to get ahead of all that is flying at us and rise above it, choosing how we spend our time for a life well lived instead of being in constant time overload.
